The 6th Annual Memorial Day BBQ

Posted on 6/12/2012 by Rebecca Layton Gunter

Oh baby! It’s the start of summer it is time for one of the best Foodie events in the District: the Gunter Family Memorial Day BBQ. Friends, colleagues, clients, and food-folks congregate at this annual open house dedicated to the All-American BBQ in the home of Rich and Rebecca in Woodridge/Brookland.

The food is always the guest of honor at the Gunter Family Memorial Day BBQ. It’s always pot luck event (BOAST YER ROAST!)  While most folks brought beer, a few ol’timers represent with delightfully unexpected complementary dishes to the buffet.  It is often those dishes that we crave the most the next day and it’s leftovers!  This year–and I am not mentioning any names, but their initials are Connie and Torrance–was no exception with spicy vegetarian fried rice and cool, tart, sweet ambrosia.  (Or, as Connie describes the dish: Oh, I dunno, I call it jellowy, marshmallow-y, whipped creamy goodness.

We marked one of the early peaks of the growing season by complimenting Chef Rich’s meat smorgasboad (shoat, goat and brisket) with a colorful spread of corn and cukes, tomato and summer squash, sweet peas and red beets.  Farm fresh eggs from Friends of Farmers; when devilled, go quickly.   The strawberry buckle satiated every sweet tooth in the house.

I cannot even articulate the pride I feel to see “Pink Stuff” was mentioned. I don’t know why I love that stuff but I do.
